About the shop
Linda and Edward Higgins started dealing antiques in the early 1970s, after Ed taught himself furniture refinishing while recovering from back surgery, and built E.L. Higgins Antique Wicker into New England's largest antique wicker dealer, with hundreds of pieces dating from the 1860s to the 1940s, including signed examples from Heywood Brothers, Wakefield Rattan Company, and Whitney & Reed. After decades in nearby Bernard, the couple moved the shop to Main Street in Southwest Harbor and broadened its focus: today's tidily organized inventory runs to vintage lobster buoys, cast iron, Pyrex, glassware, pottery, books, maps, license plates, and typewriters, alongside several hundred remaining wicker pieces. The buoy wall outside the shop has become a Mount Desert Island landmark and a favorite wedding-photo backdrop for visitors exploring the quiet side of Acadia.
